Babs has recently submitted our Great Suffolk Street project for planning, a proposal for the redevelopment of a 19th Century Warehouse. The brief from our client was simply to put the building into a sustainable use.
The design challenges included Grade II Listed Building status and being listed on the buildings at risk register, which required thoughtful consideration. In light of this we were able to design a mixed-use proposal which includes a reconfiguration of the original layout in order to increase the efficiency of the floor plate, the inhabitation of the roof and the inclusion of new circulation route as required by the current fire regulations. The configuration of the new proposal also incorporates the existing stair which is has been deemed a historically important feature of the building. The scheme retains the honesty of the original building use in keeping the original cruciform columns exposed.
